The basic information about TSL transformers;
- Our transformers are manufactured to ASNZS 61558 ( ASNZS 3108 )
- Transformers are required when the electrical device or machine requires an input voltage that differs from the mains supply, if for instance the electrical device requires 115v and the mains available is 230v.
The use of a transformer matches the electrical device to the mains supply.
- Transformers are electromagnetic devices that transform electrical energy, voltage and current, without a change in frequency.
Transformers simply change the voltage and current relationship due to the designed turns ratio. The electrical energy is transformed to magnetic energy called flux by the primary winding, and then transformed back into electrical energy by the secondary winding.
- Transformers do not produce electrical energy, they only transform the voltage current relationship. The energy taken from the supply is transformed and delivered to the load, the electrical device.
- The transformer uses a small amount of energy, referred to as loss, when in operation. This loss is very minimal, well designed transformers will have efficiencies of up to 95%.
- Transformers vary in physical size due to the V.A (volt amp) rating. 1VA = 1 Watt.
- The basic materials used are copper, electrical steel and electrical insulation paper.
- A well designed transformer operating within the electrical circuit for which is was designed, and fitted with the correct overload and short circuit protection, will provide many years of reliable service.
Operating life times in excess of 25 years are not uncommon.
- Most dry type transformers require little or no maintenance, they have no moving parts.
The most common reason for premature failure is operation at an elevated temperature due to overload, or the ingress of moisture. These situations ultimately damage the electrical insulation. Failures can generally be avoided by correctly installing the required overload protection, and by protecting the transformer from moisture. We recommend fitting a fuse of the correct rating, as per the transformer label, in your circuit. The transformer should be installed in a dry environment, or ordered with an appropriate enclosure to protect it. |
